About Northminster
A small church with a big table.
We love God and our neighbors as ourselves. Everything else is how we try to live that out — together.
Who we are
We’re about 115 members, with 50 to 60 of us in worship on a typical Sunday. Small — and close-knit on purpose.
We’re a multi-generational church of families, empty-nesters and retirees who are devoted to the gospel, deeply care for one another, and try to be a shining example of Jesus’ teachings right here in Clairemont.
Our worship blends contemporary music with traditional elements. Some of us fondly remember the formality of robes and the organ, and we honor that. But to be relevant to our community — and to a new generation — we work to relate the teachings of Jesus to the world we actually live in.
You’ll find us in the sanctuary on Sunday mornings, around the dinner table on Wednesday nights, in the garden on Saturdays, and out in the city with our partners who serve seniors, students, refugees, military families and neighbors experiencing homelessness.
Why we exist
We are a community of God’s people who seek to worship and serve the living God as revealed through the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our aim is to grow in the faith, support one another, and share our witness of Jesus Christ throughout our community and the world.
What we believe
Rooted in Scripture. Centered on Jesus.
Northminster is a member church of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), part of the Presbytery of San Diego.
- God. We seek to worship and serve the living God, as revealed through the teachings of Jesus Christ.
- Scripture. We gather around God’s Word. Our pastor is currently preaching through the Gospel of Matthew, passage by passage.
- The table. We celebrate communion on the first Sunday of every month — and our kids come back from Sunday School to share it with us.
- Grace. We try to live out grace and to love others unconditionally, as Christ modeled.
- Our neighbors. Loving God and loving our neighbors belong together.
As a Presbyterian church, we share the confessions and governance of the PC(USA). Our congregation is led by our pastor together with elected elders (the session) and deacons.

Our story
Worshiping in Clairemont since 1953.
It started with a few neighbors meeting in a Clairemont duplex in December 1953, led by founding pastor Rev. Howard Congdon. They broke ground on a permanent home in 1954, worshiped in Fellowship Hall for a decade, and dedicated the sanctuary we still gather in on April 4, 1965.
